.The site of the old York

the empty lot has fallen victim to time, as housing now
occupies the site. ![]() |

The York
Theatre
was a small, long lived neighborhood theatre that
was
located near the intersection of Greenmount Avenue
and 21st Street. This picture, taken in the
1970's
shows the block, but it is impossible to pick out
the
old theatre building. The York opened as the
Pastime,
and to this date I have yet to find a photo of the
building. The Speedy Cleaners sign in the middle
of the shot survived until 2005, when it came
down. A closer photo of the old sign can be seen
below. |

This empty lot ( left ) on Greenmount Avenue is the best I can find of what might have been the York Theatre. When I started my research in the 1980's, I had trouble researching this theatre, and twenty years, my luck has not changed. I have found photos of the area in the 1950's, and couldn't find a theatre anywhere. The York Theatre was listed for years in the Film Daily Yearbook, from the early 1930's ( showing 300 seats ) , to the mid 1950's, where the seating was shown at 299. I am not sure what happened to that one seat lost. | |
