A few old drawing that
were found on old ads for gas stations in
Baltimore. The Spanish style roof over top the
pumps were a common style of gas station found all
over Baltimore back in the 1920's. While a few
examples survive to this day, you won't find a
open gas station still using this style. For many
years, an attendant would greet you as you pulled
up, pump your gas, check your oil, wash your
windows, and perhaps even offer you a free map.

Here are a few of the remaining
examples of old style gas stations , found
here in Baltimore...

![]() This tiny
1920's era gas station sits at the corner of West
North Avenue and Division Street. No longer used
as a gas station, the building had housed a
popular car wash, which seems to have closed.

This old Service station
can be found on Park Heights Avenue, about 5
blocks south of Cold Spring Lane. It
is currently a tire store.

old gas station in West Baltimore, this one on
Gywnns Falls Parkway. This station was torn
down in late 2008 to make way for Coppin State
College expansion.

..........................................................................![]() Traveling southbound on Reisterstown
Road, just before it turns into Pennsylvania
Avenue, there are several old gas stations. The
one above is at the corner of Elgin
Avenue, and the picture right shows the
station when it first opened.

![]() This old service
station has been converted into a small used
car dealership. The area around Reisterstown
Road and Pennsylvania Avenue has been
known for the small car dealerships through
the years.
|
.
...............................................![]() In
the area of Edmondson Avenue and Pulaski Street
in West Baltimore City, this old 1920's gas
station still has a active tire repair shop in
it. Most of the old canopy roof style gas
stations built in the 1920's and 1930's in
Baltimore have been torn down, but a few do
remain if you look hard enough.

Harford Road in the Hamilton section of
Baltimore City , which is still standing.

![]() This little service station
no longer has gas, but does repairs in the
area on Edmondson Avenue and Pulaski Street in West
Baltimore. You can find this little gem
right across the street from the old gas
station seen in the picture above.

This
1920's circa gas station has found a new life
as a foreign car repair shop. The building can
be found on Belair Road in Northeast Baltimore
City.

As you travel out of the
city on Frederick Road in Southwest Baltimore
City, one can't help but notice the converted
gas station just a few blocks before the
county line.

Another corner
style gas station in Baltimore City, this one at
Guilford Avenue and 24th Streets ( left ). The
owners recently boarded up the openings , but the
building still stands. Below is a corner service
station on Mt Royal Avenue , the long since gone
Goodyear Service Center. .

This old service
station is located on the corner of Park
Heights Avenue and Oakford Avenue. The gas
pumps have long been removed, but car
service was done at the location until
2005 . This style of gas station cuts
into the corner of the block, allowing a gas
station to operate in a block that might not
have been able to support it. You can still
see the "Service" sign attached to the wall
next to the office.

still a gas station on this lot.

Here's a
drawing of a planned gas station at Reisterstown
Road and Glen Avenue, in Northwest Baltimore
City. Lord Baltimore Stations were located all
over Baltimore in the 1920's.

One of
Baltimore's nicest old gas stations was located
near the corner of McElderry Street and North
Duncan Street. This place reminded me of the old
big service stations that were once all over the
city, and was one station was perhaps the last
example in the City of this style. These
pictures were taken in early 2005.

" All good things must come to
an end ".
The block long gas station came down in
2005. It had ramps for parking on both the right
and left sides, and a area in the center where
pumps had been. When they torn down the old
station, I was surprised to see just how small the
lot was the station had occupied. I remember
growing up in Baltimore and seeing a station much
like this one on Howard Street around 22nd Street.
That place was torn down many years ago as well.

station , 25th Street at Kirk Avenue, circa
1940's. This old station has been replaced by a

years, the old Coca Cola Bottling plant ( Right

still standing, abet to other uses.

stations from what appears to be the late
1960's to early 1970's haven't been able to
keep up with the latest trends. This old gas
station on Liberty Heights Avenue in Baltimore
City stood abandoned for years but has
recently been remodeled into a used car
dealership.I believe this building was
recently torn down ( 2012) .

renovation, which might not fare well for this
old station. This station was torn down in
2008 .
